Bowsprit of the Pride of Baltimore II

This picture was commissioned in honor of the marriage of my sister-in-law and her husband. My sister-in-law has always been an encouraging person to show my photography to because she generally enjoys my less traditional images – the ones that I’m not always sure of. She’s also the type of person who doesn’t usually tell you she likes something just because she wants to be nice. When I told her and her husband that I wanted to give them a piece of photographic artwork as their wedding present, they asked for something related to sailing. This photograph was taken during the Parade of Sail – the kickoff to the annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. While I shot over 70 images that day, this was by far my favorite. I love all of the intricate details in the rigging that you just don’t see if you are looking at the whole ship. I also enjoy the neat angles that the cordage makes – it gives a driving sense of direction to the image.
