Fringed Tulips (9-18A)
My first real job was working as a yard hand in a nursery close to my home. This job really kindled my love and wonder for things that grow. During the fall season the store stocked up on bulbs, as is usual. By January, all the bulbs that hadn't sold were disposed of, and so anyone who wanted to keep some was welcome to take them home. These pink fringed tulips were among the many bulbs I planted in the middle of January not knowing whether or not they'd live to grow. To my surprise just about all of them lived, and the one side of our house looked like a picture straight out of Holland for several years to come. This was also the year I was learning photography, and so I captured this picture in black and white. I especially enjoy how the jagged texture of the fringe on the tulips is such a contrast to the smooth details on the rest of the flowers. |
